Biomes!

Our latest unit involves learning about the different types of biomes that exist on the planet. A biome is a large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities. The two biggest influences on what determines a biome is the climate and the vegetation, because they, in turn, determine everything else.

BlogWork

Go to one of the following websites:

Pick one of the biomes described on the website and write 5-10 sentences describing some of the characteristics of the biome. Please write the sentences in your own words (no cutting and pasting).

Tropical rain forests have the most amount of trees in the world. They are the main sources of oxygen for our world. There are a number of exotic and rare organisms in the rain forests. There are hundreds of different species of plants of animals with some not found anywhere else in the world. Though the rain forests are lush with many trees the nutritional value of the soil is poor due to the large amount of plants.

I chose the Ocean Biome. The ocean Biome is like, the largest Biome there is.The regions are seperated into different zones. Theses zones are, intertidal, pelagic, abyssal, and benthic. People say that the ocean has the richest diversety of species, even though they don't have as many as on land.

the temperate forests holds the most diverse variety of organisms, some not even known, since there are so many tree's being cut down, trees/wood is high in demand and has extremely decrease the numbers of temperate forests everywhere.loggers don't let the trees grow back to its full capacity in such a small amount of time before it keeps getting cut back down.

Arctic tundra
The arctic tundra is desert like, and very cold. The summer average temperature is 37-54°.In the tundra there is not trees, just plain mostly made up of rocks/gravel. It does not rain much there, but there is lots of melting ice, witch the animals drink. There are 400 different types of plant life, but they all have to adapt living in the harsh cold and fierce winds. The adult animals in the tundra have to raise there young fast during the summers, to have them adapt to the cold. There is not moch food down in the tundra during the winter time, so many of the animals that live there hibernate.

the savanna is a grass land loacated at the outer edges of topical rain forest. they are also known as tropical grass lands. there are two seasons in the savanna wet and dry. there is some rain but not enugh to make a forest. the most popular savannas are in africa with lions zebras elephonts giraffs and a few trees. south america indiea and austraila also have savannas.

I decided to choose coral reefs to talk about. Coral reefs are all over warm shallow water. They are like barriers to continents, atolls, and islands. Obliviously the main organism is coral hence the name coral reefs. The reef water tend to be nutritionally bad off they get there food from algae and plankton. coral reefs can be very beautiful here is a link: http://www.anneofcarversville.com/storag/coral_reef_florida.jpg

I picked the freshwater biomes because it looked very interesting. There is a zone called the warm shallow zone. The vegetation and animals living in the warm shallow zones are food for other creatures such as turtles, snakes, and ducks. The insects, such as dragonflies only the egg and larvae stages are found in the warm shallow zones.

Oceans have the biggest, most dominate bodies of water. Not only that but they are all together the biggest ecosystem. Oceans are similar to ponds and lakes because their regions are cut up into different zones. Those zones are Pelagic, Abyssal, and benthic. Each zone has a huge variety of species. Some people argue that oceans hold more different species then on land. That is not true, land has more species than marine life.

A biome is a type of habitat in certain places. Taiga is the Russian word for forest, taiga is also the largest type of biome in the world. Taiga doesn't have as much animal and plant species as deciduous but, it does have a lot of bugs uring the summer time and birds come to nest and feed. Taiga's winter temperature is 20 degrees and at summer it gets to 70 degrees. Plants can't survive because of the harsh conditions of winter and evergreen trees tend to grow close together.

taiga contains alot of snow. The temperature in the winter time is -54 to -1 Celsius. It being so cold the birds fly away to a food source. Also food is very short so they don't have many animals. They have alot of birds and insects during the summer. When in summer time it rains, and humidity.

alpine biomes are very cold snowy and windy. they are found in the worlds mountain regions. the usual place for an alpine biome is 10,000 feet above sea level or above. alot of the plants in alpine biomes are small because they dont have enough nutrients.

i chosed the Altpin Tundra.Altpin Tundra, are mostly in the mountains. Mainly high altitudes. Alpin Tundera does not hav tree becuase they can not grow there. The tewmputer is below freezing at night. The water however it not freezen, it is drain very well.

I chose the desert biome deserts cover one fifth of the earth rain in the deserts is less then 50 cms a year most deserts are in low altitude. There are little animals in the desert because the animals can't really sustain heat while maintaining water. In the day the heat is very high, and at night the desert is cold.In the cold deserts the winter is about -2 celsius and the summer is between 21-26 celsius

The tundra is extremely cold, and are some of the coldest places on Earth. There is little biodiversity, because very few species can live in the low temperatures. Most of the species that live there have to be adapted to get nutrients from other dead organic material. As a result, the population size fluctuates. When there are fewer living, there are more dead plants, and more food for new plants. When there are a lot of plants, there is not enough food, so some die. The cycle repeats.

Coral reefs are located in warm and shallow waters. Coral is actually a living organism that lives, grows and dies. The reason there are so many coral reefs in the tropics is because it is warm and sunny. Anemones, kelp, sea grass and other plants live in coral reefs. Coral recieves most of it's nutrients through photosynthesis since the nutrients are poor in those waters. A lot of the carribean islands are made of dead coral.
