Dirt...it's what's for dinner


Earlier in the year we talked about the food chain and how energy is transfered through ecosystems. We learned that a food chain starts with the producers (organisms that can make their own food) and then how that energy can then be transfered to the herbivores, omnivores, carnivores, and finally the decomposers. Well, if it is true that the food chain begins with the producers then the most vital aspect of that chain must be the ground in which those organisms grow. We don't often give respect and appreciation for the dirt that is one of the most significant components of our ecosystem.

Page 1: Soil is made up of decaying organic matter called humus, soil also has air and water in it, and this allows organisms like earthworms to live in soil.

Page 2: Soil is home to many different living things, scientist all over the world work together but speak different languages so they use the earthworm's Latin name (Lumbricus terrestrits), and there are billions of earthworms around the world.

Page 3: The soil ecosystem has its own food web, The soil food web is different from the above ground food web because they have different sources of energy.

1. Soil ecology
(a).Soil covers most of the land on earth from parks to under our houses.
(b). Soil is made up of things like organisms, ants, small animals, and earthworms.
(c). Because of all the pollution and global warming we are causing it is damaging the soil in major ways.

2.What is Soil
(a) Soil has a lot of thing in it like rocks, water, minerals, air. and humus.
(b) There are small organisms, earthworms, bacteria, small plants, fungi, small animals ect... in soil that need the nutrition of thing like the ones listed above.

3, interactions between species
(a) one of the main interactions between species another type of species interaction is the food web which can be one species eating another spices (or one of there own.)
or the food chain (sun makes energy for plants to grow, herbivores eat plants, then carnivores eat the herbivores, then when they die the decomposers eat there dead bodies.
(b) unlike the above ground food chain whose energy comes from the sun in the underground food chain the energy comes from a dying organic matter whose name is detritus
(c)This matter gives food to things like fungi and bacteria who when done eating rerelease the food back into the earth

4. Our research
(a) when our temp. changes to does the temp. in the soil one of the major things that can change the soil is a rainstorm.
(b)the changes in the soil change the organisms to which changes the routine and the decomposing speed.
(c) So because of these facts scientists must re-monitor and re-monitor the soil in the same place because of its rapid changes.

5. Soil organisms and species
(a)there al billions upon billions of earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) on earth, yes they are part of one species but they are all there own organism
(b)there are all kinds of species in the earths soil form single-celled things like algae to small plants and vertebrates.
(c)inside the soil environments there are so many biodiversity's that soil is considered to be one of the most diverse places on earth.

6. changes in time and place
(a)soil organisms are so small compared to us that they only take up a few very tiny millimeters of the earth and are invisible to toe naked eye.
(b) Any damages that happen to the soil affect the "lives" of organisms and the environments inside the earth.
(c) some of the things that may damage soil are pollution, erosion, people ect.

Humans, animals, and incests all live on or in soil. Soil grows are food, its what we eat. Because of pollination it is destroying the soil, giving the soil bad reactions.

soil is made out of broken down and decaying rock, and humas. Having air, water makes it possible for plants, and other organisms to grow. To understand this process, scientist are always on observation.

Scientist who study soil are called soil ecologists. The scientist have to do many experiments. Scientist take samples to resherch soil.

Scientist are all come from all over the world, and they don't all speak the same language, so when they are naming the species they have to say their scientific name. It is important for scientist to measure the health and life of an ecosystem.

There is a lot of diversity in the soil and fewersoil ecologists. There are so many species that haven't yet been identified. Even thought these species have not all been named, scientist try to find out what their purpose is.

One of the most common interactions between species is the food web, and had it goes from one animal to the next. When the animals die, bacteria helps decompose it. Some bacteria is food to other animals

Soil Ecology
Soil covers most of the earths land. When you walk in the woods, parks and in the backyard of a house you will see soil. Also soil is the surface for building and house. Lastly soil is used for planting plants,trees and agriculture.

What is soil?
A mixture of broken rocks and minerals, living organisms, and organic matter. Soil is also is made up of air and water. Without air and water organisms wouldn’t be able to survive. If it weren’t for the materials of air, water and organic matter plants, bacteria, fungi and small animals like, earthworms and insects wouldn’t exist in the soil.

Soil organisms
When their is a living thing it is known as an organism. For example an earthworm. And when it is a group of the same type of organism it is known as a species.

Interactions
One type of interaction between two species is who eats who. The above ground species get their energy comes from the sun because sun grows grass which helps feed the herbivores. And the herbivores provides food for the carnivores. For example deer. Underground food source for bacteria and fungi is decaying organic matter.

Changes
Change can happen through varies of temperature through the day and with season. Also a rainstorm can change the soil moisture in just a few minutes. And pollution changes the environment into being unhealthy for natural resources.

Our Research
Organisms in the soil affect and are affected by the surrounding of an environment. And soil throughout the day change in soil moisture and the temperature.
