Mining!

As we continue to talk about mineral resources, we have started learning about the process of extracting the minerals from the Earth. Open pit mining and shaft mining are the two primary types of mining and each has its own pros and cons. Since minerals are a necessary part of our modern world we need to make sure that our methods of extraction are sustainable for our future Earth.

Either read the article or listen to the news report about the plan to open an open pit mine in Alaska.

Write five questions that come up for you about the report.

Your questions should be deep, probing questions. Do not write questions that have obvious answers.

Example of a good question: What impact will the mine have on the local animals?

Example of a bad question: What is the name of the reporter?

Why are alliances needed? Will it harm the water and animals? Will the people agree? How big are the salmon? Why did the company have to bribe the people?

Why do people mine if it's poisoning water and the land?

What makes it ok to do this?

Why get rid of hunting for mining?

Don't people care about the area?

Don't people know that money is a huge problem? Can't they find another way to mine without disrupting nature?

Is there any way to prevent the acids from getting in the water.
Out of all the places to mine for ore, why would they do in a place were the locals depend on the wildlife. If the mine was smaller would it be less hazardous. Is there any other method of mining which is better for the enviorment. cant the goverment get involved.

Would having a mine reduce hunting in the area?
Could the animals relocate to another area?
Would mining there be good for the company's PR?
Combining this article and the radio story wouldn't people become opinionated about this?
Did the company really bribe the people?
And to answer your "bad question example: Martin Kaste
How is this debate going to be handled?

1) If the pebble mine is the richest of its kind in the world why is it called pebble mine?
2) If the answer to the first question is "because it looks like/ is the same size as a pebble why is it so rich?
3) If everyone is complaining about how much they're taking from the pebble mines, why don't they just take less?
4) Would all the state governments do things like this for money?
5) If it's harming the people and animals why don't they move away?

1) Why is there a dog barking in the middle of a sentence where they are not talking about dogs?

2) It said that there would be thousands more jobs per year is he saying that just because or is there a job shortage in the town?

3) Why it the mine area only accessible by helicopter what is keeping the other ways of transportation blocked?

4) The people said that the noise would be disruptive, is this because it is just very loud or because it would scare the game and animals, and have a physical impact on there work?

5) Why are they fighting through things like commercials instead of just meeting in person to talk things out and maybe some how find a compromise?
