The rock of Gibraltar is located in the southwestern part of Europe near and is the Mediterranean Sea. It sits on the Iberian Peninsula in Spain. It is made of limestone and is sedimentary. Calcite the material in limestone weathers very easily in rain water which makes many caves in the Rock of Gibraltar. It was created about 200 million years ago in the Jurassic period.

The Rock of Gibraltar is a Sedimentary rock called Limestone which is made mostly of calcite. It is located at the spike of southwestern Europe. Now this rock is 1,396 feet tall. It is the most well known rock on the planet. The waterway that divides Gibraltar from Africa is called "The Strait of Gibraltar." If you look at this waterway from a world map, it almost looks like Gibraltar and Africa are connected. Anyways, it used to be one of the "Pillars of Hercules." Those are some facts of the rock Gibraltar.

The Rock of Gibraltar is shown in the picture. Sometimes called the Pillar of Hercules or Calpe, the Latin name for it, is a monolithic, well, slab of limestone. Formed during the Jurassic period, 150-200 million years ago, or so. Standing tall at 1,398 ft., this sedimentary rock was used in WWII to defend shipping routes to the Mediterranean.

These are great comments, everybody. Please remember to site your sources. Gibraltar does indeed have an incredible history, geologically as well as within human history. Does anyone know how limestone forms? Some of you correctly stated that it is a sedimentary rock and that it contains calcite. Does anyone know the source of the calcite?

Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota is made out of granite. Gutzon Borglum started carving the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt into this mountain of granite when he was 60 and he died without finishing it. His son Lincoln Borglum took over the project and it took 14 years from when Gutzon started to make Mt. Rushmore to make it look like it does today and even now it's still incomplete. Some parts of the faces were never finished when funding for the project stopped in 1941.

The rock Gibraltar was formed when the Eurasian plate collided with the African plate, 200 million years ago. Also, it has many caves inside of it, where Neanderthal settlements used to be located. These caves connect together in underground passages, called the galleries.
